using film cameras workshop

This workshop is aimed at:

Landscape photographers who are interested in exploring film photography. You may have experience of using a film camera before but have been away for a while using digital, or maybe you’re a digital photographer who’s never used a film camera before at all. The workshop is also aimed at photographers who want to learn a little more about technique, film types or just want a weekend away with fellow film lovers!

Basic Itinerary

Prior to the workshop we will find out a little about you and ascertain what sort of camera you have or are interested in using. We have a number of 35mm SLR cameras, medium format cameras and our usual large format equipment you can use over the weekend, so if you haven’t got your own equipment, don’t worry – you can use ours. We also have film for each camera type which you can buy from us over the weekend.

We will meet on Saturday morning at 9am for a 9.30 start and have an informal meet and greet during which we will provide the necessary equipment you need and go over the basics. We aim to keep our workshop numbers low so we can offer personal guidance depending on what you want to explore – so you won’t be stuck going over the basics of film use if you already know them.

We will visit various Peak District locations over the course of the weekend including woodland and the classic edges.

Depending on the weather we’ll either return for an early evening meal on Saturday and head out for sunset – or, if the weather’s against us, return to the hotel and have a good chat about photography, look at some of Dav, Tim’s and workshop participant’s work and talks about anyphotographic subjects you wish to know about.

Sunday will be another day in the field visiting some wonderful Peak District locations.

Over the course of the weekend we will cover actual camera use including film loading, focusing and camera controls, metering using a spot meter, film types - both black and white and colour, different film formats and why you might want to choose one over another and developing and the equipment needed for it.

This is an excellent way to try out different film formats from 35mm to 10x8 large format, and everything in between. You don’t have to stick to one format over the weekend – try out medium format and large format, or stick to just 35mm – it’s up to you.

What you need to bring

Outdoor clothing that is suitable for outdoor use. We will be on uneven ground from time to time so good footwear would be useful.

If you have a good tripod we would appreciate it if you could bring it.

Obviously if you have film camera equipment that you want to use on the workshop, bring it along!
